Change is the only constant

Change is the only constant

Heraclitus

Change is inevitable and is by its very nature not static. As such, are in a perpetual relationship with it. We can meet the inevitability with a variety of attitudes. For instance, we can embrace it, attempt to avoid it, or actively resist it.

Some expend great efforts to resist change with none expended to adapt. Others avoid considering the possibilities and feel helpless to create meaningful opportunities. Others find ways to precisely control the new circumstances and the plan for its effects, while others are on a boundless quest for certainty before creating a plan. Still others simply embrace the unknown with only broad expectations as to what it will bring.

Often, it is the fear, discomfort, or self -judgment that overwhelms us and holds us to timeworn ways of thinking and behaving even as we wish we could create new paths. These feelings are complex and hinge on who we are, including our feelings about our own abilities, expectations of ourselves, and our temperament.

As daunting as change can be, there is also the freedom that comes from understanding ineffective behaviors and beliefs well as exploring our personal attitudes. Using the support and structure of a skilled professional to help facilitate insight is not to be overlooked.
